“Gotong Royong. Things we do together” is a type of an exhibition we like. It presents how strongly art intertwines with social life and politics. How collective work of local communities can be an inspiration for artists and that artists can be “useful”. These activities are often stretched over time and appear to be of unpredictable dynamics. It is more about creating specific works rather than the process itself.
This is the way the curators from the Ujazdowski Castle Marianna Dobkowska and Krzysztof Łukomski work with the artists who come to Warsaw for residency from all around the world and with the Polish artists whom they send to Indonesia, Mexico and other regions of the world.
The exhibition tries to capture the atmosphere of these collective activities. We will find here a documentation of socially engaged projects from Africa, Asia, North America (which were iniciated inter alia by Robert Kuśmirowski, Iza Rutkowska, Alicja Rogalska, Alicja Wysocka and the architects from the design group Centrala) but also from Poland (Jaśmina Wójcik and her collaboration with the community from Ursus).
The exhibition designed by Maciej Siuda showcases the objects in the most favourable way but also leaves room for visitors who will spend time here, take part in meetings and workshops. And a lot will be happening at the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art. Almost all the artists will engage in public activities. We recommend comebacks.
